Brother RPE500 Review

Since one of best known Brother’s previous budget-friendly models, the PE500, turned out to be a huge success, the company has decided to refurbish (factory remanufacture) their best seller. The Brother RPE500 is the brand new and slightly improved version of the PE500 and we have managed to get our hands on the product.

Design and Functionality

The previous model was a success for several reasons, but the entire phenomenon can be summed up in a few words: great design, good performance and low price. The RPE500 represents Brother’s effort to re-release one of their most successful models. At the first glance, it seems they’ve managed to do so.

The RPE500 is an embroidery-only machine, clearly meant to satisfy the average budget-conscious beginner. However, it’s safe to say that the machine overdelivers in the design department.

Aesthetically, this is a nice, breezy model with light color scheme, but with the dimensions of 20.2 x 15 x 15.1 inches and the weight of 18.1 lbs, the RPE500 comes across as a light, portable, beginner-friendly embroidery machine. Yet, it is quite sturdy and seems pretty durable at the first glance. The 25-year limited warranty certainly helps too.

The 4 x 4 embroidery area is pretty much a given, considering the price and the purpose of this model, but even more experienced (and budget-conscious) users can easily work on larger projects, as long as they’re willing to put some effort into carefully repositioning the piece they’re modelling.

With that being said, the 4 x 4 embroidery area might still be a potential deal-breaker for some, despite the low price of the RPE500.

The back-lit LCD touchscreen display is reminiscent of that of previous models and serves pretty much the same purpose – you can view and resize designs, watch tutorials and more. There are 70 built-in embroidery designs and 5 lettering fonts, which is always a great thing for inexperienced users that are just starting out.

Needless to say, computer connectivity is another good thing about the RPE500. A USB cable is included, allowing the user to import as much designs as they like from their computer or laptop. A memory card slot is also there, which means you can import designs from other Brother memory cards, in case you’ve owned one of their devices before.

When it comes to accessories, Brother traditionally overdelivers. Included with the RPE500 are: an embroidery starter kit, an embroidery arm, an accessory bag with seam ripper, needle set, cleaning brush, two screwdrivers, a touch pen, three spool caps, scissors, an embroidery bobbin thread, three bobbins and an English/Spanish operation manual.image-separator

Performance-wise, the RPE500 is a fine device. It does everything it is supposed to very well and performs much better than you’d expect, considering the low price. The stitching speed of 400 stitches per minute is nothing to write home about, but should be more than enough for the average beginner or casual user.

The automatic needle threader feature is what stands out the most. It makes the RPE500 even easier to use, while saving time (and the nerves) of inexperienced users who might have a hard time threading into the needle. The automatic needle threader makes this effortlessly easy – all that the user needs to do is simply push a single button.

The machine is easy to use, easy to set up and it works perfectly fine. It may not perform spectacularly, if we compare it to more expensive models, meant for advanced users, but it outperforms pretty much every other embroidery machine within the price range.

All in all, this refurbished version of the PE500 is a pleasant surprise, another great Brother model that many of us would love to own and that most of us can easily afford.

Final Verdict: A Good, Affordable Embroidery Machine

It does not feature any breakthrough design innovations, it does not perform spectacularly and it may not be the greatest embroidery machine on the market, but the Brother RPE500 has just about everything a good, beginner-friendly embroidery machine is supposed to have and it costs a few times less than the average similar product you’ll come across in a sewing shop.

If you’re a home business owner or a professional, you probably aren’t even considering buying it, but if you want to surprise a friend or a family member with a gift or simply want to enter the world of embroidery yourself, you can’t go wrong with the RPE500.
